The Organic Touch

Certified Organic Vs. Natural

(There is a difference!)

WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW CAN HURT YOU

Do you know what is in your skin care, body care and cosmetics? Have you ever bought a cosmetic that you were assured was natural, only to get it home, read the label and wonder what on earth those long names were? If you look at the label of ingredients on any of your current skin, body care or cosmetic products, you will see such names as Sodium Laurel Sulfate,  Mineral Oil ,Propylene Glycol, Cetearyl Alcohol,  Petroleum, and Methyl/Propylparaben to name only a few toxic synthetic chemicals and carcinogenic (cancer  causing) ingredients.

According to the Journal of the American College of Toxicology, Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS) is known to damage hair follicles and even cause hair loss. The Journal of Pharmacological Science states that SLS can    remain in the body for up to seven days after exposure. What this means is that if you are experiencing daily exposure to SLS, your body is storing it—mainly in fatty places like the breasts.

Did you know that women with breast cancer typically have four times as many  pesticides stored in the fatty tissue of the breast than  women who are cancer-free?

Although pesticides are designed to kill insects and other organisms, that’s not all they do. In fact, only 2 percent of the 1.2 billion pounds of pesticides sprayed on crops accomplish this purpose! The other 98 percent are absorbed into the air, water, soil, or food supply - and into our bodies.

The really scary thing about these pervasive chemicals is that fetuses and infants can be harmed by exposure to chemicals at levels that do not appear to harm adults. These hormone-disrupting chemicals can have effects   at extraordinarily low doses, as low as parts per trillion! Mixtures of chemicals can have effects that are different from those of individual chemicals. For instance, a combination of only two different organochlorines together in minute doses has been found to be 1000 times more potent in affecting human estrogen receptors as with the chemicals alone.

So if you think, your products are botanically based or you take a good supplement, or your a healthy eater,  you most likely are consuming products that have been treated with the use of pesticides, aren’t organically grown or have synthetic chemicals and preservatives (unless you know they are positively organic).

Become an ingredient detective, be aware of what’s in your products. There are many companies claiming to be all organic but they still have chemical preservatives and synthetic ingredients in their products! If we, as a whole, continue to purchase products that contain toxic chemicals, we are not only putting our personal health in jeopardy, but we are also jeopardizing the health and sustainability of our planet - and generations yet to come!
